West Philly was considered one of the early streetcar suburbs. Large Queen Ann homes were built for wealthy single families. Over the years, developers maximized dollars by adopting the style and charm of the earlier design, but as a twin, a layout recognized in other surrounding Philadelphia neighborhoods. These twins are just as breathtaking today, with big sweeping porches, and many with a front yard begging for colorful plantings. We are always excited to offer West Philly listings, as there are sure to be some clever nooks and crannies unique to that particular property.
It is shocking how many Philadelphians never cross over the river to explore the dynamic neighborhoods on the West end. With a bevy of small businesses, an array of delicious eats, sprawling beautiful green spaces, and tree-lined streets we have to ask ourselves, why? So grab your jacket and stroll on over to a bustling Baltimore Ave with us! Be sure to take a detour or two to admire the big Victorian architecture, hint: look up.
Green Spaces
The Woodlands- In 1840 this residential property was transformed into a cemetery and arboretum featuring over 1,000 trees. This, however, is not your typical cemetery. You will spot many joggers and dog walkers enjoying the paths that make up the Woodlands Heritage National Recreation Trail. The Woodlands’ busy calendar is marked with pop-up weddings, organized 5K’s and community events. If you have a green thumb you can bring color and life to the cemetery as a volunteer for the grave gardener program.
Clark Park- You can’t speak of West Philly and not mention Clark Park. At 9 acres this park is a central hub for meeting friends, school sports, and a casual game of petanque. With seasonal events almost every weekend, stay on top of their Facebook to be sure you don’t miss out on the fun. Hint: for a convenient landmark meet by the turtle or the Dickens statue.
