Jeff has a tremendous landscaping business called Refugia. Maybe you’ve met him at the Flower Show. Naturally, that means he and Kayla worked hard to beautify the green space across the street over the years. When they moved in it was just weeds, trash and a couple of gnarly trees. Whenever Jeff has extra trees available he plants them there. The evergreens are now taller than the house! This type of contribution to the beautification inspired the neighbors to participate in a group effort and lead to the cumulative improvement of the entire area.
What Kayla calls the “sweet spot” is a prime location only one block from Gorgas Park. Over the past decade of living nearby, they’ve done an awesome job with curating community events, weekly Farmers Market, Easter Egg hunts, free outdoor concerts, and movies in the summer. Local families frequent the playground.
It's super busy after school, a great place to meet neighbors and for kids to make friends. Gorgas Park is also home to one of Philadelphia's best rotating pop-up beer gardens this summer: The Fairmont Conservancy and Philadelphia Parks and Recreation's Parks on Tap.
377 Hermitage is also 5 minutes from the Wissahickon trails. Lido, the family dog loves this location. It’s where he can fully be the true collie mix that he is.
The Pencoyd bridge that connects Manayunk with Bala Cynwyd over 76 has been a new found joy. It just reopened after a history of being blighted and has been renovated into a flat and safe area for biking adventures.
The family go-tos in Manayunk are Cafe Volo on Main St. Serving La Colombe, they have a lot of outdoor seating and everyone knows each other. They are regulars at Taqueria Feliz for the kid-friendly Happy Hour. Greg's Kitchen, (though tiny) serves the best breakfasts with tater tots. It’s well worth the wait for a table.
Some additional amenities loved by residents and neighbors in the area as well as citywide is the Schuylkill Center Nature Preschool. 377 Hermitage is a swift 10 minutes = drive from this little haven in the woods. Non-students can enjoy the fun seasonal events hosted by the institute. Naturepalooza is a fave of many Philadelphians near and far.
Finally, Shawmont Elementary and Middle School is a wonderful public school. It’s a newer facility than most public schools and enjoys a great theater and arts program. The principal is focused on custom attention to each individual student’s education needs and levels.
